I could give some reason that this issue did not appear earlier, but it is never too late to celebrate the accomplishments of our students, staff and faculty. Many of these items reported here have been featured in the CDes Memo on the college’s website and I am grateful for each member of our faculty, staff and students who have sent their news to DHA administration as well as to the college. For those of you who may have missed an item in the Memo, you have the opportunity to read of it here. And, my very best to each of you in this new year.
STUDENT NEWS Todre Land, retail merchandising major, was featured in the November 4, 2007, St. Paul Pioneer Press for his work as a “stylist” salesman at Macy’s in Southdale. Throughout fall semester 2007, the fourth floor of McNeal Hall contained ongoing exhibitions about the lives and work of notable interior designers by DHA 4607 senior interior design students from Caren Martin's and Michael English's design studios. Apparel graduate students and undergraduate students received awards at the International Textiles and Apparel Conference in Los Angeles:
The work of graduate student Peter Gaustad in the area of Digital Images and Animation was displayed at Vesper College in Minneapolis on November 30. Monica Sklar, apparel graduate student, gave a presentation on her paper “Modern Craft and its Homespun Revolution” at the Midwest Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association Annual Conference in Kansas City in October. She was also awarded a travel grant for the conference from the University of Minnesota’s office of University Women. Majuel Tarr (M.S. student, housing emphasis) completed the national Consumer Leadership Corps Training Program of the Aids Alliance for Children, Youth and Families. The 9-month program is based in Washington, D.C., and Majuel was the first person from Minnesota to participate. Majuel was chosen “Most Memorable Person” by her team leader (Linda Scruggs, Deputy Director of Programs) and was voted as the “Person Who Experienced the Greatest Level of Growth,” by her peers in the training program class.
Hyeon Jeong Cho, apparel graduate student, was selected by the ITAA Student Fellowships and Awards Committee as a recipient of the 2007 travel scholarship “Sarah Douglas Fellowship for Professional Promise” and attended the ITAA Annual Meeting in Los Angeles. Christine Crumm, housing studies major, received the 2007 Tessie Agan Undergraduate Paper Award from the Housing Education and Research Association. The original paper was written for the course DHA 5467W, Housing and the Social Environment, taught by Becky Yust last year. Christine receives a cash award and registration fees waived for attendance at HERA's annual meeting. The Housing Organization of University Students (H.O.U.S.) and the CDes Alumni Office sponsored the second annual Housing Studies Alumni Gala on Friday, November 9. At the Gala, graduate student Kim Skobba presented her research “Housing ‘careers’ of low-income individuals in urban communities and how the receipt of housing assistance influences their housing career paths.” Marilou Cheple presented her research “External panel/exterior thermal and moisture management system: A way to build energy efficient housing for low income families.” Bert and Laurel Fraher are the proud parents of Lily Leona, born September 7, 3:57 am, 7 lbs, 20.5 inches. Bert is a MFA student. Graduate Student Milestones Dong-Eun Kim, Minjeong Kang, and Jain Kwon passed their Preliminary Written Exam for the Ph.D. during fall semester. Kevin Condit successfully passed his final oral exam for the Master of Fine Arts Interactive Design on October 30, 2007. The title of his project was “Fading Landscapes: A Retrospective. Changing Societies and Populations on the Northern Great Plains.” Chin-Man Chen successfully defended her Ph.D., “Female Body Characteristics Related to Bra Fit” on October 3, 2007. Young Sook Lee successfully defended her Ph.D., “The Relationship Between Indoor Environmental Quality and Worker Satisfaction and Performance in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certified Buildings” on November 30, 2007. Jean McElvain has been appointed assistant curator for the Goldstein Museum of Design. McElvain is a Ph.D. candidate with an apparel emphasis, and has a B.S. in costume design and a Masters of Architecture. Recently she served as James Boyd-Brent's research assistant for Here by Design III: Process and Prototype researching the history of design process and its relationship to the impact of new technologies on design process. As assistant curator, McElvain will be responsible for developing learning opportunities with the museum's collection, working with faculty and scholars to research and develop a comprehensive collections plan, working with guest curators on exhibition development, and enriching the museum's outreach to the community. STAFF AND FACULTY NEWS Congratulations to Juyeon Park on the birth of her daughter, Michelle Marie Ko, born on September 26, 11:05 am, 8 lbs, 8 oz. Dean Bev Durgan of the Minnesota Extension Service presented William Angell with a Dean’s award as a distinguished extension campus-based faculty member. Angell received the award for his exemplary work in the field of indoor air quality. The Lectra Innovation Award for Faculty Research was received by Elizabeth Bye, associate professor; Karen LaBat, professor; Ellen McKinney, 2007 Ph.D. graduate; Dong-Eun Kim, graduate student, at the International Textiles and Apparel Conference in Los Angeles: Char Klarquist and Julie VanSteenbergen were each selected to participate in the President’s Emerging Leaders (PEL) program this year. In addition to retreats and professional development sessions, they are working on team projects with other staff members across the University, including the coordinate campuses. Steven McCarthy was featured in an article in Page, a German design and media culture magazine. Titled “My Home is Your Castle,” the article reproduced ten images from his Commercial Rhetoric Art Project. Monica Fogg completed design work late summer for the set (and some graphic elements) for Lorie Line's Holiday Extravaganza, 2007. The set was fabricated and packed onto semis November 6th for two months of 'road shows'. She (and her Pop Chamber Orchestra) perform in various venues and various states, including Colorado, Utah, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and of course Minnesota. Fogg is also in the active design phase for interior features for a new restaurant franchise and in the concept stage of design for exhibits and space use for a mobile museum.
Publications Brad Hokanson and MFA graduate Bert Fraher have published “Narrative Structure, Myth, and Cognition in Instructional Design” in the January 2008 issue of Educational Technology. The article examines Joseph Campbell's monomyth as a universal structuring form for learning and technology. Kim Johnson and Jeong-Ju Yoo (former graduate student) have coauthored “Effects of appearance-related teasing on ethnically diverse adolescent girls” in Adolescence. Sauman Chu has a chapter entitled “Digital game-based learning in higher education” accepted for publication in the Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology (forthcoming, IGI Global). Eundeok Kim and Kim P. Johnson wrote “The U.S. apparel industry: Futuring with undergraduate students with apparel majors,” which was published in the October issue of the Clothing and Textiles Research Journal. Marilyn DeLong, Gloria Williams, Nancy Nelson Hodges, Jane Hegland, and Mary Thompson’s article “Constructing Knowledge for the Future: Exploring Alternative Modes of Inquiry From a Philosophical Perspective” was published in the October issue of the Clothing and Textiles Research Journal. Jeff Crump’s article “Subprime Lending and Foreclosure in Hennepin and Ramsey Counties” appeared in the Summer 2007 edition of the CURA Reporter. Karen LaBat has a chapter titled “Sizing Standardization” in a book edited by Susan Ashdown, entitled Sizing in clothing: developing effective sizing systems for ready-to-wear clothing (Cambridge: Woodhead Publishing, 2007). Ashdown completed her DHA doctoral studies with Marilyn DeLong as advisor, and is currently a professor at Cornell University. Brad Hokanson has authored an article on his creativity research entitled By measure: Creativity in design. It was published in the October issue of the Journal of Industry and Higher Education. Kim Johnson has co-authored a journal article, “The U.S. apparel industry: Futuring with undergraduate apparel majors,” published in the Clothing and Textiles Research Journal. Dress Sense—Emotional and Sensory Experience of the Body and Clothes has been published by Berg. Inspired by the work of Joanne Eicher, the book is the outcome of the symposium held in 2005 honoring her. Edited by Donald Clay Johnson and Helen Bradley Foster , papers by many alumni and faculty are included.
Presentations Ann Ziebarth was invited by the Minnesota Department of Human Rights to present a workshop at the 2007 Human Rights Day Conference. Her session was on migrant workers housing and focused on housing conditions and legal issues of discrimination and domicide. Joanne Eicher was selected for the annual Fall 2007 Ada Comstock Distinguished Women Scholars Lecture on November 13. These lectures honor the accomplishments of University of Minnesota women who have earned prestigious awards and have made exceptional contributions to research, leadership, and scholarship at the University. The title of her presentation was “Beyond the ‘F’ Word: Fashion, Dress & Cultural Meaning.” In early January, Marilyn DeLong will be presenting the paper “Learning to collaborate across cultures: Evaluating experience of a cultural exchange” with several students at the Hawaii International Education Conference. Ann Ziebarth presented a paper co-authored with Kim Skobba (Ph.D. candidate) titled, “Housing the working poor in exurbia” at the Housing Education and Research Association Annual Conference in Charlotte, NC. Marilyn Bruin also presented a paper, co-authored with Marilou Cheple (Ph.D. student) and Shirley Niemeyer, at the Housing Education and Research Association Annual Conference in Charlotte, NC, titled, “The property manager and resident knowledge regarding mold and moisture-related issues in rental units.”
Sauman Chu traveled to Hong Kong to attend the “Design Asia: Sustaining Culture Through Design Education” conference from December 10-11. She will be presenting her paper “A case study: Teaching design students on designing a bilingual brochure.” Her paper is one of six papers that were accepted for the conference. Tasoulla Hadjiyanni presented the paper “Constructing differences in the home: The experience of Minnesota Hmong, Somali, and Ojibwe” at the American Anthropological Association meeting ‘Difference, (In)equality, & Justice,’ on November 29 in Washington, DC. Tasoulla Hadjiyanni presented the paper “Conceptual design -- A pedagogy for developing and communicating complex ideas in a complex world” at the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) Midwest Regional Conference in Chicago, October 11-13.Several DHA apparel faculty members presented papers at the International Textiles and Apparel (ITAA) conference in Los Angeles in November. Elizabeth Bye presented two papers, “Optimized Pattern Grading” and “Fit Analysis Using Live and Electronic Stimuli.” Kim Johnson presented the papers “Apparel Returns, Black Friday” and “Self-monitoring and teasing: Content analysis.” Marilyn DeLong presented the paper “Living on the Edge: Experiences of a Cultural Interchange Around the World Encouraging Global Cultural Study.” Karen LaBat presented her paper “Comparison Study of Female Bodies, Pattern Deeply Matters.” Exhibitions The Pre-Clothing Design students in DHA: 1221- Fundamentals of Apparel Assembly exhibited their first class project for the semester. “Child’s Play,” on October 22. Sherri Gahring was the instructor of the class. The Goldstein Museum’s current exhibition, “Here By Design III: Process and Prototype,” curated by James Boyd-Brent, is on display through January 20, 2008. The exhibit features prominent Minnesota architects, designers, and researchers’ digital fabrication techniques and prototyping. The Goldstein Museum’s exhibit from July 21-September 30 was “Products of Our Time.” Curated by Daniel Jasper, the exhibit featured various products by an array of designers that functioned as political, religious, or environmental commentary. The exhibit included almost 50 objects, ranging from furniture to box cutters. James Boyd-Brent's one-person exhibition -- World enough, and time... – was displayed at the New York Studio Gallery in New York City from November 1 through November 24. In the News The College of Design was a partner in a Project Homeless Connect Minneapolis/Hennepin event that took place at the Minneapolis Convention Center on October 1. Several CDes employees participated in the event: Lori Gilbertson (Student Services), Char Klarquist (DHA), and Virajita Singh (CSBR). Project organizers estimate the event served 1,800 people. The event served as a one-stop shopping model for delivering services to the homeless including housing, employment, medical care, and mental health care. Brad Hokanson presented “Presenting our own [his]tories,” a story telling workshop for participants at the European Conference on Creativity and Innovation (ECCIX) in Copenhagen, Denmark. Hokanson also presented results of his research, entitled “Measuring Creativity: Two Studies.” Hokanson was cited for his work in Borsen, a Danish business paper. Housing Studies professor Jeff Crump was quoted in the St. Paul Pioneer Press October 17 regarding foreclosures and mortgages on newly built homes in Minnesota. An article about Crump and research on foreclosures was published in the October 4, 2007 edition of the newsletter Finance and Commerce. The Minnesota Daily cited Jeff Crump for the article “New housing on University Avenue offers suite-style living” on November 20.
ALUMNI Barbara Caron (Ph.D., 1991, Design Communication) has accepted the position of Assistant Director of the International Quilt Study Center in Lincoln, NE. The IQSC is home to the largest publically held collection of quilts in the world. It will soon move into a new 37,000 square foot building. Her job will be to oversee the day-to-day operations of the facility, serve as the financial officer, handle publication rights, supervise the office and hourly museum staff, and lots of other management functions. The Center is 10 years old, but the new facility means expanded staff and programs. For more about the center, see www.quiltstudy.org
Annette Lynch (Ph.D., 1992, Apparel) and her colleague and husband, Mitchell Strauss, celebrated the release of their co-authored book (pbk and hbk) for Berg that presents several perspectives on fashion theory. The title is CHANGING FASHION: A Critical Introduction to Trend Analysis and Meaning, Oxford, Berg, 2007, 189 pp. Grant Eull (B.S. 2001 Graphic Design) was honored with the University of Minnesota Alumni Association Rising Star Award on Tuesday, October 30, for outstanding volunteer leadership in support of mentoring, college to career programs, and community building among graphic design students and alumni. Eull was a founding member of the College of Design Student and Alumni Board, which sponsors the college mentor program and serves as an advisory group for CDes student services college to career program. Patrick Redmond (M.A. graphic design emphasis, 1990), of St. Paul-based Patrick Redmnd Design, is celebrating 40 years since beginning work in the field. He is also the president of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Minnesota chapter (AIGA), which celebrated its 30th anniversary on November 9th.
Mary Kubik McNaughton (Ph.D., 2001, Design Communication) has written a book entitled: The Little Book of Drawing; a Friendly Approach. A book signing was held on January 7 at Borders Books on University Avenue. |
